Functional Fitness & Nutrition
Movement and strength for the long term, in a space that feels safe and unintimidating - no gym required.
Plenty of people want to feel stronger or move more easily, but they are put off before they begin - by gym culture, by not knowing where to start, or by the sense that these spaces are not really meant for them.
My approach is designed as an accessible alternative. You might be new to exercise, returning after injury or illness, or picking things up again after a long gap. The goal is not intense training programmes, though I can build those if that's genuinely what you're after. It is incremental, sustainable improvement that supports your wellbeing overall.
My emphasis is on functional fitness - building and maintaining the movement and strength that keep you capable and active for the long term. Mixed with some gentle cardio to keep your heart and lungs strong, you will feel well day-to-day, whatever your lifestyle.
Alongside this I can offer guidance and feedback for improved nutrition which may support weight loss goals. No extremes, no crash approaches - changes that hold.
If you would value more specific nutritional expertise, I can help signpost you to a nutritionist.
Movement also has a real effect on how we feel. Regular physical activity helps manage stress and anxiety, which is why this work sits so naturally alongside counselling and coaching.
Our emotions and our physical health are connected.
Fear, worry and anxiety are felt in the body, not only in the mind. When we sense danger the body responds automatically, whether the threat is real or one we have learned to react to. This is the fight-or-flight response: the sympathetic nervous system activates and the brain releases adrenaline and cortisol, readying you to face the threat or move away from it. Your heart beats faster, your breathing quickens, your muscles tense, your blood pressure rises and you feel more alert.
Short-term, that is exactly what you need. Held for longer, it starts to cost. Prolonged stress puts pressure on the heart and blood vessels, affects sleep and weight, and contributes to anxiety and low mood.
With greater awareness, you can start to notice how stress and emotion show up in your body - a racing heart, tense muscles, shallow breathing, sweating, tiredness. Those signs are useful: they tell you that you are becoming stressed or overwhelmed and then you can start to do something about it.
Naming the emotion - anger, fear, worry, sadness - and staying curious about why it is there begins to settle it. So does simple movement. A walk releases muscle tension, steadies your breathing and eases the physical effects of stress, helping your nervous system return to balance.
Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly.
Perhaps you'd like to work on your physical wellbeing in bespoke sessions or you'd simply like me to put a workout together - just let me know.
If you simply want to understand more about how your body adapts to potential threats, feelings and emotions and work on how to manage that, we can discuss this in your counselling or coaching sessions and adjust to your needs as we go - either way, I'm here to help.
Before any physical work begins, we complete a short health screening together so that everything we do is appropriate and safe for you.
